What is ADHD?
ADHD refers to Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorders and is one of the children’s behavior problems that make it hard for children to pay attention in school. This children’s behavior problem is often not diagnosed until children start pre-school or Kindergarten and sometime later. The symptoms of ADHD that exhibit themselves in this children’s behavior problem are inability to pay attention, constant movement and impulsivity. Some children have low levels of these children’s behavior problems, while others have a high degree of ADHD. Usually the symptoms of impulsivity and hyperactivity appear first, with the lack of ability to pay attention occurring last in children’s behavior problems.
With ADHD as one of the children’s behavior problems that are most noticeable in the classroom, children are unable to sit still. However, different settings can bring on the symptoms of the children’s behavior problems more than others. If the activity is something in which the child has an avid interest, there are few children’s behavior problems. If the child is bored, then it is easier to detect that he/she has a children’s behavior problem.
In the hyperactivity part of ADHD, the child with this children’s behavior problem is always moving, even when sitting. He/She will pick at other children, look around and often stand up and move about the room. This does not mean, though, that all hyperactive children have the children’s behavior problem called ADHD. The other symptoms of impulsivity and inattention also have to come into play before this is diagnosed as a children’s behavior problem. Some of the signs of impulsivity and hyperactivity in children’s behavior problems are:
• Blurting out answers in class
• Not taking turns when playing
• Rushing ahead of others to be first in line.
The inattention part of ADHD and children’s behavior problems is the one that causes the most problem for children in school. When the child cannot pay attention to the instruction or complete the work, the children’s behavior problem causes these children to do poorly in school even though they may be very smart. Although there is medication to help children with the aspects of this children’s behavior problem, there is controversy surrounding their use, especially in young children. Once children get older and understand the reason for their children’s behavior problems, they can learn coping strategies that will be very beneficial to them.
